Introduction: The Genesis of ixigo

In 2007, Aloke Bajpai and Rajnish Kumar founded ixigo, a travel tech company with a vision to revolutionize the industry. The journey, however, began with a pivotal moment during a skeptical pitch meeting with a venture capitalist.

Initial Challenges: Navigating Skepticism and Unconventional Business Models

Despite a solid business plan, the duo faced rejection from a venture capitalist who dismissed their million-dollar investment request, predicting a bleak future for ixigo. The challenge lay in the unconventional business model – ixigo focused on comparing, crawling, and redirecting users to ticket-selling websites rather than selling tickets directly. Investors struggled to grasp this unique approach, especially with established players dominating the market.

The Crucial Year: 2008 and the Global Financial Crisis

After a challenging period of rejections and uncertainty, ixigo secured a seed round from a Singapore-based VC fund, BAF Spectrum, in 2008. However, the global financial crisis following Lehman Brothers’ collapse delayed significant funding. To weather the storm, Bajpai and Kumar implemented drastic measures such as salary cuts, expense reductions, and support from a landlord.

Shifting Focus: Recognizing Untapped Potential in Bharat

In 2021, ixigo strategically shifted its focus to trains, buses, and non-flight travel options, recognizing untapped potential in Bharat. The acquisition of ConfirmTkt solidified ixigo’s position as the largest train travel booking platform in India. This strategic move contributed to the company’s emergence as a leading player in the travel industry.

ixigo’s Business Model: Bridging Users and Travel Booking Websites

Operating as an intermediary, ixigo facilitates a comprehensive comparison of travel options for users, deriving revenue through commissions on successful bookings. The platform’s unique features, including the 180-day fare viewpoint, direct booking capabilities for airline tickets, and an advanced hotel exploration mechanism, contribute to its reputation as a user-friendly portal.

Financial Triumph: From Struggles to Soaring Revenue

The numbers speak volumes about ixigo’s success. Operating revenue soared from ₹380 crore in FY22 to ₹501 crore in FY23, with train ticket bookings contributing 61% of the revenue.

Innovative Products: PLAN and BHAI

ixigo’s introduction of PLAN, an intelligent travel planner developed in collaboration with OpenAI, represents a significant leap in travel assistance. This cutting-edge feature, powered by ChatGPT API, delivers personalized suggestions and itineraries, redefining the travel planning experience.

Resilience and Self-Belief: The Uphill Battle in the Face of Rejections

Aloke Bajpai’s journey embodies resilience and self-belief instilled by his upbringing in Kanpur.

Despite facing rejection from over 100 investors in 2018 and 2019, Bajpai remained steadfast. He attributes ixigo’s determination to the fiery spirit of a small town, presenting a vast and promising opportunity to build for Bharat.

Conclusion: A Decade of Persistence and Belief

In retrospect, the initial rejection served as a catalyst for Bajpai to prove the naysayers wrong.

Over a decade later, ixigo not only stands as a successful travel tech company but also serves as a testament to the power of persistence and belief in building for Bharat.
